Around 30 million people in the United States are afflicted by migraines, the most frequent neurological disorder in adults worldwide. This condition has a major impact on our society because of its debilitating tendency to diminish the person’s quality of life.
A migraine attack can be triggered by many factors such as hormonal changes, a change in the sleeping pattern, certain medications, bright lights, specific foods or noise, stress and depression.
The Symptoms Of Migraine
A typical migraine attack produces some or all of these signs and symptoms:
-
Moderate to severe pain, which may be confined to one side of the head or may affect both sides
-
Head pain with a pulsating or throbbing quality
-
Pain that worsens with physical activity
-
Pain that interferes with regular activities
-
Nausea with or without vomiting
-
Sensitivity to light and sound
Inflammatory Toxins Mediate The Pain In Migraine
Inflammatory toxins mediate the pain in the neurovascular system. The following evidence suggests that inflammation contributes to migraine transformation:
- The source of pain in migraine headache involves release of inflammatory cytokines and proinflammatory mediators.
- There is an increase in C-reactive protein, an inflammatory biomarker, in young adult patients with migraine.
- Levels of several inflammatory cytokines are significantly higher in migraine patients than in healthy controls.
- Cross talk between nitric oxide and prostaglandins contributes to the severity of pain response. Under inflammatory states, nitric oxide and prostaglandins are released simultaneously in large amounts.
- During migraine attacks, elevated levels of prostaglandins have been detected in blood and saliva.
- Inflammatory mediators may increase the frequency, severity, and duration of migraine attacks, which in turn would cause central sensitization (a learning process with progressive amplification of a response).
Other known risk factors to migraine transformation include depression, stressful life events, head trauma, sleep apnea, frequency of headache attacks, and medication overuse.
Inflammation Is A Common Link Between Migraine, Obesity And Depression
According to a longitudinal population study, persons with obesity are at five times the risk of developing chronic daily headache compared to normal weighted individuals. A large population study confirmed that obesity was a risk factor for chronic daily headache and people with high body mass index had more frequent headache attacks among migraine sufferers. Many inflammatory mediators that rise in obese individuals are also elevated in migraine. These mediators are suspected for being responsible for increased frequency, severity, and duration of migraine attacks.
Another recent population study showed that, in the United States, obesity was associated with significant increases in major depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, and sleep apnea, all of which are risk factors for migraine progression. Obesity has also been associated with a number of chronic pain syndromes including fibromyalgia, arthritis, back, and neck pain.
Migraine Medicines Have No Effects On Systemic Inflammation
There is still no cure for migraine. Pain-relieving medications are often used to stop the pain once it has started. These painkillers do not cure headaches and just give timely relief. If you use these medications frequently or for a longer period, they may cause numerous side effects.
Preventive medications can reduce the frequency, severity and length of migraines and may increase the effectiveness of symptom-relieving medicines used during migraine attacks. In most cases, preventive medications don't eliminate headaches completely, and some cause serious side effects.
Complementary therapies (acupuncture and massage) and natural remedies (herbs, vitamins and minerals) may be helpful to reduce stress and mild headaches.
